New £600,000 hub for aspiring North East writers and editors Prolific North

New Writing North, the creative agency for the North of England, will launch a writing and publishing skills hub in autumn 2022. The £600,000 scheme is funded by the North-of-Tyne Combined Authority and d other local funders.

The launch is a major boost for the North East, where New Writing North is currently looking to establish a new writing center. Taking place in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland and offering significant online opportunities, the Writing and Publishing Skills Hub will offer people across the region a range of courses, activities and events to develop skills and careers in the sector.

Over three years, New Writing North will create opportunities ranging from school tours for students interested in pursuing careers in the creative and media industries, to networking and business skills training for practitioners and SMEs. The Writing and Publishing Skills Center also builds on New Writing North’s existing work and current investment programs.

New Writing North’s award-winning Young Writers program will also be expanded, including new Young Writers Groups and a professional summer school for aspiring writers and editors for which participants earn the Arts Award qualification.

In total, the Writing and Editing Skills Center creates or enhances 16 areas of work and develops new paths in the industry. The program will be run by a new team of three employees in New Writing North’s Newcastle office. These positions are now open for applications.

Claire Malcolm, Managing Director of New Writing North, said, “This significant investment will help New Writing North establish new areas of long-term work. With our new MA in Publishing created with Hachette UK and Northumbria University launched in September, this region is now leading the way in creating infrastructure for the development of creative people from diverse backgrounds. My desire has always been that a young person growing up in the North East could imagine a career as a writer or editor. Now they will have a clear path to pursue this ambition.
