Montblanc’s Writers Edition looks to the Brothers Grimm

0

This year’s Montblanc Writers edition focuses on Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, colloquially known as the Brothers Grimm, who collected and published folk tales in the 19th century. Children and adults around the world have been captivated by their works, including Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood and White as snow. Perhaps less well known is the influence of the brothers on a German dictionary whose noble purpose was to record the origin and use of every word in the new High German language, from Luther to Goethe. So this new collection not only references the duo’s beloved yarns, but also their effect on culture.

Each of the four editions of the Tribute to the Brothers Grimm collection has the engaging shape of a wooden walking stick, which references the tradition of wandering storytellers who traveled from village to village entertaining audiences from afar. The unusual clip appears as a gnarled root – in reference to the roots of language – or the brothers’ facial profile, depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The cap rings of the writing instruments are engraved with the words “ES WAR EINMAL…” or “Once Upon a Time”. And the feathers are etched with flames to symbolize the fires around which the children sat to hear the beloved stories. The title of the Brothers Grimm’s first publication Kinder und Hausmärchen (Tales for children and households) is engraved on the cone.

Tribute to the Brothers Grimm limited edition 8

The Tribute to the Brothers Grimm limited edition is the most exclusive of the four editions, with only eight pieces created. Its origin is the story of White as snow, whose namesake’s matchless beauty angers her stepmother and drives her to seek revenge. Snow White ends up finding love in a handsome prince after a circuitous path that includes seven dwarfs, a witch, and a poison apple.

The cap and body of the fountain pen are made of 18k white gold decorated with a decoration in the form of yellow gold leaf and matte white gold inlays. The body is made of a faceted rock crystal, hand-engraved with an image of Snow White inspired by a drawing by Ludwig Grimm. The cap and body are adorned with diamonds which symbolize the shimmering beauty of Snow White, according to Montblanc.

This edition is crowned by a molded piece composed of the letters of the alphabet, from A to F, covered with a sapphire crystal. And the cone is adorned with hand-engraved leaves and rubies; it is also set with a black spinel cabochon symbolizing Snow White’s black hair.

Other thoughtful editions in the collection are the Brothers Grimm Limited Edition 86, which tells the story of Hansel and Greteland the 1812 limited edition which refers Sleeping Beauty. Finally, a set consisting of a fountain pen, a rollerball, a ballpoint pen and a mechanical pencil tells the story of Rapunzel.
