Events for aspiring writers come to Oldham

A SERIES of events for aspiring writers is coming to Oldham next month.

The Comma Press Writers Days will run from Friday October 8 to Saturday October 9 at the Oldham Library and feature a range of industry experts and published writers.

The series kicks off Friday with a poetry workshop hosted by Lisa O’Hare from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Oldham Library.

Lisa O’Hare’s first collection of poems, Lockdown Life, A Rollercoaster of Emotion, was released in May of this year. His work has been featured on BBC Radio Manchester and has been published in a number of zines, anthologies and online journals.

The workshop will be followed by an online “How to get published” panel from 6pm to 9pm with Jazmine Linklater of Carcanet Press and Peter Kalu, novelist and artistic director of Commonword, a writing development organization based in the North. -Where is.

Pete Kalu has published nine novels in a range of genres, as well as short stories and poetry. His latest novel One Drop is expected to be published next year.

Jazmine Linklater has been Marketing and Events Manager at Carcanet Press since March 2018. She also sits on the Editorial Board of Broken Sleep Books, which publishes a range of booklets and writers‘ collections.

On Saturday, award-winning novelist and short story writer Lara Williams is hosting an in-person writers’ workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Oldham Library.

The workshop will focus on the benefits and challenges of second-person writing. He will also be interested in short fiction films by Lorrie Moore, Margaret Atwood and Junot Diaz.

Lara Supper Club’s novel, which was published in 2019, has been translated into six languages ​​and won the Guardian’s Not The Booker Award.

His first collection of short stories Treats was released in 2016 and 2017 in the United States under the title A Selfie As Big As The Ritz. The collection was shortlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Award and shortlisted for the Edge Hill Award. Lara has a new novel coming next year
