According to Fred Hiatt, editor of the Washington Post editorial page, diversity has long been a âwatchwordâ for the newspaper industry. But the Post is putting its words into practice with its recent launch of Voices Across America, a platform that features writers from across the country “who are uniquely positioned to provide perspectives on the ground.”
Just days before the first anniversary of George Floyd’s death in May, USA TODAY presented a year-long network project, “Never Been Told: The Lost History of People of Color”. The project is a multimedia series that seeks to “uplift, through high-profile investigative and explanatory journalism, the people, places and ideas that are often excluded from history books,” according to one. Rebuild Local News sees the government as an ally, not an enemy. Launched in April 2020, the coalition represents more than 4,000 community-owned newsrooms that are owned by local and non-profit interests. Their goal is to work towards a future where public policies better support local news. Last fall, the coalition announced a major proposal on how the government can help strengthen local news.
